 Fate

Sideways is een vaderlandse progband en Fate is de opvolger van het in 2006 verschenen …And Then There Is Light. Omdat ondergetekende niet bekend is met dat vorige album, is er geen vergelijk te trekken. Wel is bekend dat Sideways hier en daar wordt vergeleken met het oude Marillion. Voor een gedeelte is dat inderdaad terecht. Vooral zanger Alex Visser zou die associatie kunnen oproepen. Niet dat beide zangers qua stem overeenkomsten vertonen, maar wel op het gebied van aanwezigheid. Visser zingt vrijwel ieder gaatje dicht, zoals Fish dat ook deed. Gelukkig heeft hij geen slechte stem, wat mij betreft veel beter dan Fish in zijn Marillion-tijd. Naast de zanger, draagt ook gitarist Gerwin Gabry flink bij aan het groepsgeluid. Hij mag gerust als een aanwinst voor de progscène beschouwd worden. Naast zijn compositorische kwaliteiten, bewijst hij zich hier ook als gitarist. Zijn spel is technisch in orde, gevarieerd, creatief en bij vlagen zeer symfonisch. Dat laatste is vooral in de bijzonder fraaie track Of Hope And Glory te horen, zodat de link naar Marillion hierin het sterkst naar voren komt. Het toetsenwerk van Jurriaan Visser mag er trouwens ook zijn. Over de gehele CD bezien is het misschien wat minder flitsend dan wat Mark Kelly destijds uit de mouw schudde, maar verder is er niets mis mee. Dat kan ook van de composities an sich gezegd worden, waarin sfeer- en tempowisselingen in voldoende mate aanwezig zijn. Vijf van de zes tracks scoren zo’n beetje rond de acht minuten. Alleen het prachtige Phoenix is korter. Het blijkt de ballad te zijn van een toch al niet overdreven heftige plaat. Hoewel Sideways niet als een nieuwe progsensatie bestempeld zal gaan worden, heeft de groep met Fate toch een uitstekend visitekaartje afgegeven. Info www.sideways.info

Fate is the second album by the Dutch band Sideways, and like the first one it's a mixture of styles. You will find a lot of different elements, 60-70's psyche and symphonic melodic rock parts of it even sounding like the early 70's heavy bands. Also lots of proggy elements and atmospheric feelings.

Fate.  Starts off with a loud fuzzy guitar repeating the same notes a few times, and then goes into an atmosphere reminding me of the later Pallas. Also finding some early Marillion-like soft melodic parts. Song is nicely put together.

Springflower.  Melodic ballad with nice keys in the background. Chorus is a bit more rocky where the guitar makes the background. Nice guitar solo in the last part of the song.

Of Hope and glory.  Starts with a soft simple piano bit, going into a kinda atmospheric rocky ballad. I find traces of Pallas in this track too. I feel though that the melody in parts of this track being a bit monotonous.

Phoenix.  Again a melodic ballad, could have been a late 60's early 70's Dylan song. Very nice put together with vocals and keyboards alternating.

Drought.   Beginning reminds me of old Uriah Heep, then turns into another ballad where the accompanying guitar is in my opinion to loud and also boring. All of a sudden it changes beat  and the first thing that comes to mind there is some Magic Pie, before going back to the "boring part". In total, there's a lot of different variating styles to be found in this track.

Waste Of Strain.  Here again I find some Uriah Heep in the beginning but also traces of early 70's pop/rock ballads. Also traces of early Marillion later in the song. Guitar solo part has this floydish feel to it. Very nice!

Overall, this is a pretty nice album that actually needs to get a few listens before it sets. There's unfortunately one thing that I'm not too happy about. I get a feeling that the fuzzy rhythm guitar is mixed too loud in quite a few places and thereby almost kills the keys.
